All faith traditions believe that family unity is sacred. Care must be taken to ensure that families can grow and thrive together. The Trump Administration has proposed a policy which would force immigrant families to make an impossible choice between caring for their children, parents and grandparents, and keeping their family together in the United States. The proposed regulation puts immigration status at risk if an immigrant is not wealthy, has a preexisting health condition, or participates in programs that support health, nutrition and housing stability. As people of faith we are called to work towards a world where all people live free from poverty and can achieve their full potential. This proposed rule is morally bankrupt because it seeks to keep people from accessing these basic support programs that can help them escape poverty.
But we can help stop it if enough of us act.
